Hello, we are The Modern Hillbillies from Room 6 at South Makirikiri School. This term we are focusing on a country and western inquiry and production. There are 28 students in our class and we are very creative thinkers (apparently). Our teacher is Mrs Mc Donald, the best teacher ever. We are the senior students in the school which is why we are often taking on a lot of responsibilities. Our school is a small rural school that has us well prepared for high school.

The Terrifying Predator. Instructions / Surroundings Waiting / Watching Harnessed Up An Adventure
Tall shady giants stood tall around me. Instructions twirled around in my head like a girl doing cartwheels. My ears listened hard, but I couldn’t keep my eyes from wandering... Tufts of strong grass sat tall, bushes sprouted, greenery grew all round, and hills fell away in the distance as the final safety instructions flowed on through. Movement began and an alphabetical line formed.
Nervous excitement buzzed around me, as the first victim slowly made its way up the wooden steps to conquer the predator. One went down, followed by another. Screams bellowed in the still air. An icy chill went down my spine. The giants steadily swayed in the light wind. The sun swept behind a cloud. The sky dimmed.
Another couple departed and the usual scream followed. My heart pounded, my turn was near. A few more innocent people faced the predator until it was time for me to face it myself.
A chilly wind began as my sturdy structure made its way up the steps onto the stone platform. My mind was turning in circles. Breathe Beth, breathe. I carefully placed my bottom on the steel seat as my harness was tightened. My dangling legs turned numb.
My eyes looked out over the long, black, droopy tightrope. Will I be able to face this terrifying predator or will fear take over?

=History:

=Although Raetihi is now a small rural town it used to be a minor industrial centre between 1900 and the 1950s. It had many timber mills which provided most of the employment for the region. As the trees were cleared, agriculture became more prominent in the local economy. The two main agricultural activities are cattle farming and vegetable growing and they now provide the bulk of employment as the timber mills have closed. The decline of the timber industry had a negative impact on Raetihi, but recently the town has experienced some growth due to tourism. Its close distance to Mount Ruapehu and popular skifields has led to an increase in accommodation and cafes.
